Our story

Since 1941

Necessity is the mother of invention, and this truism sits at the very heart of the Building Evolution story.

In 1941, Albert Brown began building his own family home on pastoral land in Pennant Hills, NSW. Not a builder by trade, he became self-taught out of necessity, at a time when carpenters and builders were scarce due to the demands of World War II. He called this home Wandeen.

Around this same period, Giuliano Frank was born in the Bagnoli refugee camp in Naples. His family later immigrated to Australia, where Giuliano completed National Service and went on to study architecture. Wanting to create a home for his partner, Bill Browns daughter Robyn, and her children, Ben and Zoe. Also facing a shortage of tradespeople, he took on the task of building the house himself. Over the course of his career, Giuliano would go on to build more than one hundred homes across Melbourne as a registered builder.

At just fifteen, a young Ben Campbell needed cash for the school holidays and began working as a labourer for Giuliano’s building crew. After exploring a few different trades, Ben returned to school in his twenties to complete his carpentry apprenticeship and later obtained his Builder’s Licence. His stepfather Giuliano served as one of his professional referees, while his grandfather Albert remained his enduring inspiration.

With more than thirty five years in construction, Ben has since championed countless carpenters and builders to learn, evolve, and grow—hence Building Evolution. Today, his son Sam Campbell is a qualified carpenter, continuing the family tradition. Ben’s wife, Vicky, is on track to become a licensed builder in 2026, with Ben proudly acting as her technical referee.

From our family to yours, we look forward to building great things together.
