THE RISKS AROUND STONE PRODUCTS
Since the spotlight was placed on the health risks of Silica in the stone industry, we’ve uncovered that many engineered stones contain up to 97% silica content. Thankfully many stone companies have now released engineered stones containing lower silica content (10-30%) in response to this issue. While the use of PPE and wet cutting as suggested by Caesarstone can minimise the risk, so too does manufacturing products that contain less of this deadly substance.
To date we believe that Caesarstone have only lowered their silica content to below 90%. It is likely that a ban on products containing over a certain % of silica will be announced this year which is speculated to be somewhere around 40%. In the meantime, we are guiding our clients to choose low silica products as an ethical choice.
